If you want a compassionate, helpful, sympathetic funeral home to help during the difficult loss of a loved one, this place is NOT it! Please read before you spend $15k with this funeral home. The funeral director, Scott, refused to schedule a service time for our loved one before meeting in person but he couldn’t meet with us for three days making it very stressful and difficult to know how to plan and what to tell family so they could make work and/or travel arrangements. I feel this was all about money. We would have been happy to put a deposit down or something so we could get a firm time for the funeral. From the first “in person” meeting with Scott, we did not have a good feeling, but one of the family members highly recommended Hewell and Sons. By the time we did get to meet with him, we were running out of time, so we were leery of switching funeral homes at that point. He had nothing prepared when we got there, no words spoken while we sat in silence for him to gathering multiple pages of papers, didn’t offer any sort of condolences, the atmosphere was anything but warm. Nothing was electronic so we sat there a LONG time while Scott hand-wrote the contract four different times because he kept making mistakes. However, when I tried to hand him a copy of the obituary, he would only accept it via email... The casket selection was extremely limited and the one we chose had a noticeable scratch on it. He said they didn’t have any others and initially stated there was nothing he could do about it, but when pressed he did take $100 off the $3500 cost of the casket (a less than 3% discount). I asked him what would be covering the bottom of the casket. He said nothing but the gurney because they don’t have drapes for offsite funerals. I’ve never worked with a funeral home that didn’t have drapes to cover the gurney and bottom of the casket! At that point Scott started pushing us to buy flowers from Kuhns to cover the entire bottom of the casket. The day before the funeral and after much stress to find a resolution, he came up with a drape as if he was doing us a favor. The funeral was going to be closed casket however a few relatives wanted to see our family member before the casket was finally closed. On the day of the service, Hewell and Sons advised us to have family ready to view at 10:00. They were supposed to arrive at 9:30 for set up but didn’t arrive until 9:55. To make matters worse and without going into too much detail, our loved one did not look like herself! That was especially difficult as I really feel like this goes back to the poor service we received from this funeral home. When we were working on sending Thank Yous the day after the service, we called Kuhns to figure out who one of the arrangements was from and ended up finding out we were missing two arrangements that Kuhns stated they delivered to the funeral home at the same time they delivered four other arrangements. I called Scott about it at 10 that morning and had to leave a voicemail. When I hadn’t heard from him, around 7:30pm I sent him a second text to which he replied the flowers are not their responsibility. In that same text, he casually mentioned an additional arrangement was delivered to the funeral home from another florist after the funeral. It is sad that we had to call him about another matter only to find out that a dear friend’s flowers arrangement was sitting at their funeral home. The death certificate arrived two weeks after her passing. Just when we think we’re finally done having to deal with this funeral director anymore, we go to pick it up. I called him ahead of time to tell him we were on our way. He opens the door to tell us he found an error, so he would have to resubmit the death certificate for amends. You would think he would have reviewed the death certificate BEFORE he called us to come pick it up. This error resulted in about 4-5 weeks’ delay in getting the amended certificate.

My husband passed suddenly leaving us in total shock. I did not know how to proceed. One of our pastors found Hewell & Sons and made the appointment for us. No high pressured sales or pushing more on us than we had planned or intended. Brian Box was so kind and caring. He even arranged last minute viewing for my husband's brothers before the cremation. Thank you so much for your loving care of us at such a difficult time! Highly recommend them.

I had the opportunity to collaborate with George Hewell and Sons Funeral Home over the past few weeks as we prepared for a beloved congregation member’s service. They were incredibly compassionate and professional. I was so touched by the dignity they gave to our dearly departed friend and am grateful to have shared in this experience with them. I will gladly recommend them to other families in need. Thank you for your incredible work!
