OK here's what I experienced- My dad passed away in NC. I live in Fla. So "friends" he lived with who helped him out had his body sent to Shuler after passing awasince 1 friend works at Shuler. My dad wasn't married & I'm his next of kin. So I spoke with Lisa J. (Funeral director). Now note that my mom passed away 2mo prior also in NC so I'm familiar with the process unfortunately. My mom's cremation was 1295.00. I was quoted at Shuler 4000 for my dad. Huge difference & for what? Same service. After asking questions I was told they "price match". They would do a basic cremation with everything for about 1650 and change. My dad's friends had access to his debit card so they took the $ out to pay for this. Lisa was then out for 2 days and during those 2 days I had questions but nobody would talk to me. When I got another funeral director on the phone, Ron, he said"Im sorry, I can't tell you anything or give you any information " I said"i don't understand, why? Lisa's not there so why can't you help me?" He said"Its our policy". What could I do? So I hung up and waited for Lisa to get better & return to work. Note-during mom's cremation if one person wasn't able to help, another person would. This Shuler policy is ridiculous. OK so I had to ask if the web site obit was included in the basic cremation package. It wasn't offered. So I received a template that was not easy to fill out. Once I completed the template she prepared it and sent it back to me to confirm it was OK via email. There were SEVERAL errors. I fixed them in a red font so they would not be missed. The obit still went up with errors. Deceased family listed as alive. Sigh. OK here comes the FINAL SIN. Lisa shipped my father's remains. I expected them to be in a simple basic wooden box, similar to my mom's and wrapped in bubble wrap. Nope! A PLASTIC BIN and best yet, only 1 single air pocket so the plastic bin got banged around, the lid came off, some loose ashes too. I thought I was going to just collapse as I opened the box. The ashes are tied off with appears to be a certified tag. There may be a hole in the bag punctured by the plastic bin container damage. I purchase cardstock online and it comes wrapped completely in bubble wrap! My dad's remains weren't even given the same respect as cardstock! I'm so disgusted. I bet if we paid the 4k he would have been treated with more dignity. It's a sin that someone who didn't get a higher paid package deal got treated with less dignity! Unfortunately I live out of state & I'm not rich but truth is my father should have been treated better. He was a good man with a good heart. He didn't deserve that. Shame on Lisa for shipping his remains so poorly. And shame on Shuler for treating me & him less than. If you have the money I'm sure you will have a decent experience. But if not, look for a place that treats people with the same dignity as people with money. Mom's was much less & we/she were treated with much more class. I understand different levels of services. But basic decency like shipping remains & obit accuracy shouldn't be based on your wallet. Shame on Shuler!

My mom died unexpectedly a little over a week ago so we called on Shuler Funeral home to take care of arrangements and services. My parents had a pre-paid plan in place that they had purchased back on 2009. There were a few challenges with how that plan was documented back then (non fault of any current staff), but Tom Klopfenstein handled the challenge with professionalism and compassion to our complete satisfaction. Tom was a great comfort to our father throughout the process and made sure our whole family was taken care of and not burdened with a lot of details. Mom’s services were beautiful and we were able to focus on remembering her and caring for my dad. Thank you Tom for how you took care of us when we needed it.

We are in the process of taking care of my father's arrangements and have been working with Tom - he has been very caring and responsive and has gone out of his way to be helpful. Our family appreciates all of the support that we have received. I will also say, we had previously used the facility on Church Street for my mom's arrangements about six years ago and I could not believe how different the place looks now - so much brighter with lots of thoughtful touches, and they even have a room now for receptions that is very nice and fully equipped with ovens, a fridge and freezer, coffee makers, etc. Highly recommend checking them out!
