I know that Lake Placid is a small town and has limited services, but months after my father’s death, the memories of my poor experience with Michael Brochetti have stayed with me. This funeral home was not my choice, but rather the choice of my father’s wife. We visited the funeral home the day after my father’s passing—it’s a small building with what seemed to be a small chapel inside, but what I found strange was an open door and an unmade pull-out bed in a room in the direct line of sight right off the main foyer. We discussed the funeral arrangements and my step-mother made some decisions she needed to make for the service. I let Mr. Brochetti know I would e-mail him later that day with an obituary that I would draft and a photo. I emailed everything that day, then the next day while I was driving home to another state received a call from Mr. Brochetti—he was VERY abrupt with me and said he couldn’t read the obituary in the format that I sent. I had to interrupt him from continuing to bark at me and tell him I would pull over right away and send it in another format. It still grates on me that someone who touts themselves as being in the funeral business for many years could be so harsh towards me, after all, I just lost my father, so why was I getting chewed out by the funeral director who was supposed to be helpful during this time? When I returned with my husband a few days later for the funeral, there was barely a hello from Mr. Brochetti when I walked in the door (of course, there were very few people there because of COVID, so it wasn’t a crowded room). I asked for multiple funeral cards so that I could mail them to my father’s family who had requested them. He did oblige, but let me know there was a misspelling on the funeral cards… no attempt was made to rectify the mis-print such as re-printing them and mailing me a new bunch. I was given direction from the church ladies as to when to stand up and give a personal tribute for my father… it was towards the end of the service. When it was time for me to give my speech/eulogy/personal tribute to my father, I walked to the altar and he sent two naval servicemen down the aisle at the incorrect time who both then had to stand in front of the altar waiting for me to deliver my speech. Details don’t seem to be Mr. Brochetti’s strong suit, as my father was called by his full name during the entire service—a name he didn’t go by and asked people to call him by his nickname. I would think that, again, someone in the funeral business for many years would ask the simple question when he met the family of the deceased, “What did they prefer to be called? His full name or is there a nickname?”. Sure, Mr. Brochetti could put that off on my step-mother (a grieving widow) for not telling the priest, but again, it would seem that detail would be a helpful service a Funeral Director would pay attention to. Mr. Brochetti’s services will not cost you top-dollar, but just know that you will get bare-bones quality for his services if you use him to create the final memories of your farewell to your loved ones in his care.
