*** If you chose to go through Semian for your loved ones funeral services, be caution of mistakes that could have been caught with just a little bit of more attention and/or thought. *** i write this review a year later knowing that what happened still infuriates 365 days later. A year ago, my 24yr old brother had passed away tragically. My family chose Semian for services as we had family ties to them and had gone with them previously. I will credit that they were very nice to my grieving parents during the services and have continued to think about my grieving parents since then by sending cards around holidays. It’s unfortunate to say that myself and my other family members did not have a great experience. First, when we went into the office to talk about certain decision that had to be made for the service, Tammy brought up to myself, my parents, and my siblings, that young kids die all the time and continued to talk about a group of young boys who passed a couple week prior. it felt extremely inappropriate to bring this up to my grieving family who just found out their son/brother had died the day prior. Second, I specifically had put sentimental items in the casket to be cremated with him. Tammy decided upon herself to remove an item I put in there, which never got cremated with him. Tammy never once asked my family what should be removed and if she should remove that item. It personally was extremely heart breaking knowing that a picture i had drew for him the Christmas prior (which my brother was very emotional about receiving the gift), would not go with my brother. Third, they are horrible at grammar. My brothers obituary was beautifully written but there was MULTIPLE spelling and grammar mistake throughout the whole obituary. I truly wish they would have let myself review it before submitting it because those errors could have easily been fixed, especially if they took the time to read over it. Not to mention multiple family and friends pointed out and noticed all the errors. Lastly, the day before services, my close family was invited to see my brother before the community. My cousin, who had come in a few minutes behind everyone else, was interrogated of why she was there and her relationship to my brother. I cannot remember who specifically gave her a hard time, but it was very infuriating to find out that they were giving my grieving cousin a hard time when already in a very very hard situation and moments from seeing their deceased cousin . As someone who has specifically went to college to study death and dying and taken multiple courses on the end of life, it was extremely disappointing to see how unprofessional and careless they were with process. At the time, I had even reached out to my college mentor, who has a Doctorate in Death Studies as i felt that i may be going crazy and wanted to get their opinion on it. They completely agreed and thought it was extremely unprofessional. I understand death is unfortunately a process that has to be moved on fairly quickly, but if they slowed down for a few moments to look over (or even hire someone professional to write the obituaries that will not make grammatical and spelling errors), bite their tongue about how common young deaths are to a grieving family, and fully communicating with the family, i dont think any of this would have come to the surface. Again, they were and have continued to show support to my family/parents but I am truly disgusted (still a year later) of their unprofessionalism. I personally will not be looking forward to having to go through them in the future and will be keeping a VERY close attention to detail when that time comes. If you chose to go through Semian for your loved ones funeral services, be caution of mistakes that could have been caught with just a little bit of more attention.
