In July 2022 I found myself unexpectedly making funeral arrangements for my wife and the mother to my two young children who died unexpectedly at the age of 37. After two years of reflection I make this review as to what unfortunately I took away from my experience with Hopkins Rector. Our Funeral Director Jay was aloof, unreachable, and disconnected throughout the week leading up to our service. Myself and the immediate family felt as if we were not a priority and that something was amiss. During the viewing and after the conclusion of the funeral individuals commented on the appearance and presentation of my wife including things like “junk in her eyelashes”, ”clumpy makeup”, and an observation that the closure of her mouth was visible. These comments unfortunately reflect what some peoples lasting final memories will be instead of finding solace in those moments. At the conclusion of the grave site services and an over the top theatrical dismissal of those in attendance by Jay we inquired about retrieving our flowers and belongings from the funeral home. Jay provided us with instructions and the time to return that afternoon. My sister-in-law and I left our family gathering and returned at the specified time to find nobody at the funeral home. I attempted to call Jay several times to no avail. After leaving multiple messages I called and spoke to someone on call for the funeral home who stated they would relay our message and have someone reach out to us. After waiting 30 minutes and no return phone call a hairstylist thankfully arrived at the funeral home and came to the front door after hearing us knocking. She was unaware of the situation but assisted us inside and helped us gather our belongings which were piled up by the door inside the viewing room already setup for another funeral (casket and all) for the next day. Nobody from the funeral home took the time to return our calls that day or reached out to apologize to us after. It was a clarifying moment that we meant absolutely nothing to those entrusted to care for our loved one and our family. I selected Hopkins Rector based upon my familiarity with them serving our community in an unexpected moment of loss and grief. If I had it to do over again, based upon this experience, I would absolutely not entrust Hopkins Rector to care for my family again.

My fiancé’s sister passed away Monday and we used this funeral home. The staff was very helpful and professional. They connected our family with resources to pay for entire funeral except required $20.00 death certificate fees. She had no life insurance and death was unexpected. Jay was very professional and helpful. Very honest and professional business.
